Man Utd 'refusing to rule out Mason Greenwood return' as internal investigation continues

A new report has provided an update on Mason Greenwood's current situation at Manchester United.

Greenwood, 21, was arrested at his home in January amid a series of allegations against the footballer, after a number of images and videos were posted on social media.

He was immediately suspended by United in the wake of the allegations and was later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Greenwood was due to stand trial in November before all charges against him were dropped in February after key witnesses withdrew their involvement in the case and new material came to light during a police investigation.

But he remains suspended by United while the Premier League club conducts an internal investigation into the striker's behaviour.

Greenwood breaks his silence after charges dropped

Greenwood is under contract with United until 2025 and it remains to be seen whether he has a future at Old Trafford or if he will be sold or released once the investigation has reached its conclusion.

The Guardian claim that United staff are split over whether Greenwood should be allowed to resume his career with the Red Devils.

While a 'substantial proportion of the workforce would be deeply unhappy if Greenwood played for the club again', it is claimed that 'others feel a duty of care towards the player' who denied the charges against him and has not been found guilty of any crime.

Man Utd hierarchy 'refusing to rule out' Greenwood return

TEAMtalk journalist Graeme Bailey claims members of United's hierarchy are refusing to rule out Greenwood returning to the fold.

It is also claimed that Greenwood's future at the club could depend on a change of ownership of the club, with the Glazers currently in the process of selling United.

"It is believed members of Manchester United's hierarchy are refusing to rule out a return for the England international," said Bailey.

"Nobody at the club is expecting Greenwood to return to training this season, but thereafter he could yet have a future.

"A number of Greenwood's teammates believe he should be given a chance to kick-start his career next season after the police charges against him were dropped.

"One major unknown is what will happen with the possible change of ownership, as it stands the Glazers do not appear in a hurry to bring Greenwood back into the fold, but a new owner could have very different opinion."

The Athletic claim United have rejected offers from Turkish sides for Greenwood while the club's internal investigation continues.

Fenerbahce is believed to be one of the clubs interested in signing the player.

What has Greenwood said?

Greenwood released a short statement after the charges against him were dropped, which made no mention of his football career and plans for the future.

"I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support," read the statement.

"There will be no further comment at this time."

Greenwood has not played for United in over a year, with his last appearance for the club coming against West Ham on January 22, 2022.

In total, he has made 129 appearances for United, scoring 35 times.

He has also won one cap for England, which came in a Nations League match against Iceland in 2020.
